Abstract
Many pleural disease may cause benign thoracic empyema. The potential differentiations in a pleural based tuberculous empyema from pyogenic empyema on basis of computed tomography(CT) have not been documented. We reviewed retrosepectively the CT
findings of 50 patients with pathologically proved empyema(above the stage 2) in order to find out the differential pints between pyogenic and tuberculous empyema. Twenty-two patients had pyogenic origin, and 38 patients had tuberculosis. The CT
features suggested that significantly differentiating pints including contour and extent of pleural thickening, mediastinal pleural involvement, accumulation of extrapleural tissue and change of ipsilateral thoraic volume of empyemas was not
found.
Therefore the differentation ofof tubrculous empyema from pyogenic empyema may be not possible with CT findings only.
